Detail of Colonoscopy You Should Be Aware of

A colonoscopy runs for 30 to 60 minutes by an experienced doctor. The doctor gives a vein medication to make the patient relax and drowsy. The patient has to lie on the left side on the table for examination. In the process, the doctor uses a tube that is flexible and long – known as colonoscope. This tubular instrument has ½ inch diameter for transmitting an image of colon lining. It helps the doctor to see the potential abnormalities. The instrument is inserted from the rectum opening and reaches to the large intestine.

Since this instrument is flexible the doctor can move it along the colon curves. You may have to change the positions if needed for helping the doctor to see the inside image. This tube also blows air inside the colon and helps to expand the organ thus the doctor can see a clear image.

If you feel mild cramping during the process, take slow, long and deep breaths. Once the process is finished, the doctor will withdraw the tube and will examine the bowel lining.

If during the process the doctor finds any abnormalities, a little amount of tissue is removed for analysis that is called biopsy. Besides tissue, this process also removes polyps.

Preparation for Colonoscopy

The colonoscopy preparation involves emptying the colon. Until this is done correctly the polyps will not be visible clearly and the process will take longer time to complete. The entire process may need to be done again. The preparation has two parts – one is drinking and the second one is bowel-cleaning liquids.

A few days before the process, the patient should eat low fiber diet and exclude nuts, whole grains, dried or raw fruits and seeds.

The day just before the process the patient should eat only clear liquid like broth, clear juice, coffee or tea.

On the day of the process follow the same diet like the previous day but do not eat anything prior two hours of the procedure.

Tips for Colonoscopy

  • Have all your instructions handy days before the process. Read and understand them well. Collect wet medicated wipes and skin soothing gels.

  • Have your arrangement and privacy for the preparation. Ask someone else to take care of children and adults at home.

  • If you are bored with plain water have some other clear liquids. Eat popsicles, clear broth, tea, coffee (without milk). Do not consume anything with added color.

  • Wear loose and comfortable cloths and stay near the bathroom.
