Colonoscopy Screening – Revealing Facts

A cancer type starting in the large intestine is colon cancer (colon). The last portion of the digestive tract is the colon.

It affects older people typically, but can happen at any age. It typically starts as small and non-cancerous cell clump or accumulation that grow on the inside of the colon, called polyps. Any of these polyps can grow into colon cancer over time.

Polyps can be small, causing few symptoms, if any. For this purpose, by detecting and removing polyps before they develop into cancer, doctors suggest routine colonoscopy screening tests to help prevent colon cancer.

When colon cancer grows, certain procedures, including surgery, radiation therapy and drug therapies, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, are available to help manage it.

Colon cancer, which is a concept that incorporates colon cancer and rectal cancer that starts in the rectum, is also called colorectal cancer.

Disease Care

We specialize in minimally invasive surgery and can handle the most complex conditions. We look at the whole patient and provide the person with a multidisciplinary consensus plan.

Our cancer cases are often addressed to a tumor board: a multidisciplinary meeting with members of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, where pathologists, and we discuss the case and establish a consensus plan together. Cancers in stage 4 can be very complex. Either surgery, chemotherapy or radiation may be recommended, or a combination of these three therapies.

Tips for Prep

Many kinds of plans (preps) are out there. Your healthcare practitioner addresses in depth the planning with you. It's really important to closely follow the instructions. The day before your operation, the most popular preps begin, where you:

  • Drink beverages and laxatives

  • Avoiding solid foods

The first half is completed the day before the scheduled colonoscopy screening, and the second half is done either that day or the morning of the operation. Most arrangements are broken up. When we do so, the preparation in the colon is more tolerable and can enhance the vision.

Often patients have to repeat the operation if we conduct a colonoscopy and there's not a good view. By following the prep diet guidelines, you can save time and money. See us at Digestive Disease Specialists for colon cancer screening in OKC.
